by Taylor Jenkins Reid

I went into Malibu Rising knowing it was a popular book, but not knowing much else about it. I love to go into books blind sometimes because I like the element of surprise. One of my favorite books of the year so far was Daisy Jones, so I knew going into this that I would probably like it, Taylor Jenkins Reid is a great author.

I really enjoyed all of the characters in this novel, even Mick, who at times is intolerable. The siblings dynamic reminded me of my siblings and I growing up, although we did not have as much heart ache as the Rivas kids. I like that the time line goes back and forth to tell everyone's story, and there is some other character development thrown in.

The way she described Malibu will make you want to visit. When Nina Riva's husband leaves her for another woman, she is heart broken but still finds the energy to take care of her sibling. The strength of Nina sets the tone of the novel. When the Rivas family have their annual end of the summer party, things get crazy, it was fun to go on a wild ride with everyone in the house while I was reading.

The story of June and Mick was hard to read at times, and I just felt so bad for June. She was the kind of mother you would proud to have. Jay and Hud, brothers, have their issues they get into a huge fight over, but in the end they decide to make up. The youngest Kit is trying to figure out her sexuality and uses the party as an excuse to mess around with a man, deciding on her fate, int he 80's it wasnt talked about much, so that was interesting to read about. I think Kit was my favorite character in the book! I related to her so much in my high school days.

I cant wait to read more from Taylor Jenkins Reid soon!
